Keith “Bit” Ackel 


Lacassine-Keith “Bit” Ackel, 57, lost his battle with cancer at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, April 27, 2013.

He was born in Alexandria on November 28, 1955 to Don and Numa Ackel. Keith was a graduate of Sulphur High and a member of St. John the Evangelist in Lacassine. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator for the Operative Engineering Local #3. Keith enjoyed collecting guns, NASCAR, horses, reading, hunting and fishing.

Keith is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Tina Galley Ackel; son, Jason Anthony Janssen and wife, Jill; grandchildren, Abigail, Micah, Bryson and Kinley; parents, Don and Numa Ackel;  brothers, Dan Ackel, Sam Ackel and Nathaniel Ackel; sisters, Angela Ackel and Sondra Schwaab and husband, Tom; mother in law, Dorothy Galley; sister and brother in laws, Sharon and Steve Meyer, Trena and Victor Miller, Tim and Donna Galley, Tana and Sherman Broussard and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father in law, Pierre Galley.

A memorial service will be in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. with Father Roland Vaughn officiating. Visitation is on Monday from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. Cremation is entrusted to Johnson & Brown Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Keith’s memory at Jeff Davis Bank to help with medical expenses.

The family would like to give special thanks to Heart of Hospice for their loving care of Keith.


Barbara Jean DeFries

Ragley-Barbara Jean DeFries, 87, passed away in a local care center on Wednesday, April 24, 2013.

Barbara was born in Oklahoma to the late Cecil and Georgia Lee Brasel on June 11, 1925. She was a graduate of Barnsdall High in Oklahoma and a member of Magnolia Baptist Church in Ragley. She and her late husband, James “Jim” DeFries, ran Jim’s Citgo Full Service Station and Friendly Jim’s Auto Parts in Gillis for many years. Barbara enjoyed cooking lunch for her family every Sunday and making pies for them as well. She loved her pet Maltese, Missy Prissy.

She is survived by her sons, Jimmy DeFries and wife, Erma, Larry DeFries and wife, Mona, all of Ragley and Tim DeFries of St. Louis, MO; brother, Doyle Brasel of Barnsdall, OK; 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and grandson, Brandon DeFries.

Funeral services are in Magnolia Baptist Church in Ragley, Friday, April 26, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with burial in Magnolia Cemetery. Visitation is in the church on Friday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service at 2:00 p.m.

Linda Adams


LeBleu Settlement- Linda Sue Adams, 62, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 in a local hospital.

Linda was born in Lake Charles on November 8, 1950 to the late Woodrow and Nola (Savoie) Stewart. She was a graduate of Iowa High School. Linda was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church.

Cherishing her memory are her husband of 42 years, Michael “Mike” Adams of LeBleu Settlement; sons, Bobby Adams and friend, Love Weeks of Iowa and Dwayne Adams of Pineville; brother, Michael Stewart (Jennifer) of Rayne; sister, Alice Fontenot (John Wayne) of LeBleu Settlement; grandchildren: Ridge Adams, Mackenzie Adams, John Ibert and Elizabeth Rapp. She is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Edward Stewart and Geneva LeBleu and granddaughter, Rayven Nickole Adams.

A Funeral mass will be in St. Joseph Catholic Church in LeBleu Settlement on Friday, April 19, 2013 in 10:00 a.m. with Father Andreas Kedati officiating. Burial will follow in LeBleu Cemetery under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home. Visitation begins Thursday from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home.


Edward Joseph Stewart


Lake Charles- Edward Joseph Stewart, 73, passed away in a local care center on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 surrounded by his family.

He was born in Midland, LA to the late Woodrow and Nola (Savoy) Stewart. Edward was employed as a Security Guard with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office. He loved car racing, fishing and hunting alligators.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Stewart; sons, Louis John Stewart, Robert Stewart; daughters, Tina Marie Benoit, Debra Bertrand and companion, Kenneth Ardoin and Michelle Lowe and husband, Eric; brother, Michael Stewart (Jennifer); sisters, Alice Fontenot (John Wayne) and Linda Adams (Michael); 8 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; godchildren, Penny Fontenot Parker; Michael Dorociak, Jr. and special friends, Angela Frederick and husband, Anthony. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Geneva LeBleu; grandson, Joseph Bertrand and great grandchild, Brysieghn Dorociak.


Services will be in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 15, 2013 Pastor Tony Bourque officiating. Burial will follow in Lacassine Cemetery under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home. Visitation will begin on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.


John D. Manuel


Iowa- John David Manuel, 75, passed away in his residence surrounded by his family on Saturday, April 6, 2013.

John was born on December 18, 1937 to the late Emile and Melanie (Daigle) Manuel in Lake Charles. He attended St. Margaret Catholic Church and St. Raphael Catholic Church. John was employed as a cook with Halliburton and PPG. He enjoyed cooking for his friends and family. John had a love of music and he played with the Red Saltzman and the Ramblin Cajuns, Cliff Hoffpauir Band. John’s son, Kevin Duplechin and Dillard Duplechin and the Pineywood Playboys also enjoyed playing in bands together.

Survivors include his wife of 2 1/2 years (together 24) Jeanette Manuel; sons, Kevin J. Duplechin (Peggy) of Lake Charles; daughters, Kim Rachelle G. Slavent (Bobby) of Iowa, Shontara N. Duplechin Reyes (Enrique) of Iowa and Patricia Manuel Marcantel and friend, Roger Trahan; brothers, Harold Manuel of Columbus, Texas and Gary Manuel of Denver, Co; sisters, Loretta Myers (Norris) of Sulphur, Rochella Fendley of Lake Charles, Alberta “Birdie” Guillory (Ray) of Lake Charles; 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 1 on the way. He is preceded in death by his parents; 3 siblings, George Manuel, Lula Mae Chasson and Theresa Bourque and 1 grandson, David “Boo” Marcantel, Jr.

Funeral services are Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home with Rev. John Crumb officiating. Burial will follow in Broussard Cemetery under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home. Visitation is Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service with a rosary at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home.


Ruby Lee Valere

Lake Charles- Ruby Lee Batiste Valere, 68, passed away in a local hospital on Monday, April 08, 2013.


Ruby was born July 23, 1944 in Lake Charles to the late Issac Batiste, Sr. and Mary Eva Charlot. She was a graduate of W. O. Boston. She attended McNeese for 2 years, and studied at Sowela. Ruby was a lifelong member of Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church, where she sang in the sanctuary choir and a member of the Blanche Page Elizabeth Cohen Matron’s. She was employed at St. Patrick Hospital for over 30 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family and her pet dog, Cocoa.


Cherishing her memory are her sons, Corris Vallery, Jr. and John A. Vallery, Sr. of Lake Charles; daughters, Veronica Fontenot ( Arthur), Elonda Vallery, both of Lake Charles; brothers, Henry Batiste( Delsia) of Moss Bluff, Larry Batiste (Renae) of Houston, TX; 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and her best friend, Willie Mae Thomas. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Patricia Caulder, Hester Deboest, Cora Batiste; brothers, Leslie Sinegal and Issac Batiste, Jr.


The Service celebrating her life will be in Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Robert Campbell officiating. Cremation has been entrusted to Johnson & Brown Funeral Home.

Easton Gary Thibodeaux


Lacassine- Easton Gary Thibodeaux, infant, passed away in Oschsner’s Medical Center in New Orleans on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 in the comfort of his mother’s arms.


Easton was born in New Orleans February 28, 2013 to Michael Lee Manuel and Kayla Rene Thibodeaux.


Cherishing his sweet memory are his parents, Michael “Mike” Manuel and Kayla Thibodeaux; brother, Elie Guilbeau; maternal grandmother, Stephanie Thibodeaux; great grandparents, Elie & Jeanette Richard; aunt & uncle, Patrick & JoAnne Thibodeaux; cousins, Hunter & Kadence Thibodeaux and god parents, Todd Myers & Melissa Guidry and numerous extended family. Easton is preceded in death by his PePaw, Gary Thibodeaux.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lacassine, Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Roland Vaughn officiating. Visitation will begin Friday in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home from 3:00 – 9:00 p.m. with a Cursillo rosary at 6:30 p.m. and continue Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Lacassine Cemetery under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home.



James Lewis Bray


Sulphur-James Lewis Bray, 69, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2013.


Cremation is under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home.

Leona Mae Marceaux


Crowley- Leona Mae Marceaux, 91, passed away in a care center in Crowley on Tuesday, April 2, 2013.


Leona was born May 8, 1921 to David and Elizabeth Sensat Lejeune in Egan, LA. Leona was a longtime member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Midland, LA, where she was a member of the Ladies Altar Society. She enjoyed tending to her flower garden and crafts. Leona was a self-taught seamstress.


She is survived by her 3 daughters, Elnora Duplechin and husband, Calvin of Ragley, Kathryn Gary and husband, Donlean of Morse and Debra Cormier and husband, Mike of Jennings; sisters, Mary Thibodeaux of Egan, June Hupp of Mississippi; brother, Joseph Lejeune of Estherwood; 17 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren. Her husband, Edward Marceaux and siblings preceded her in death.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be in St. Aloysius Catholic Church of Midland, LA at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2013 with Father Clint Trahan officiating. Visitation will begin Friday in the church at 8:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be in Estherwood Memorial Cemetery of Estherwood, LA under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home of Iowa.
