Jewell Burks

Iowa- Mary Jewell Burks, 80, passed away in Christus St. Patrick Hospital on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 surrounded by her loving family.

Jewell was born in Buller Settlement on January 25, 1932 to Charlie Buller, Sr. and Mary (Lee) Buller. She owned and operated the Country Mart grocery store in Buller Settlement for a number of years. Jewell was an avid reader and was an active supporter of Jeff Davis Parish Library Book Mobile. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend and will be missed by all who knew her.


She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Max L. Burks; daughter, Kathy Posner and husband, Michael of New York City; son, Jeffery Burks and wife, Polly of Florida; brothers, Charlie Buller, Jr., Clyde Buller, Richard Buller and David Buller; sister, Barbara Inez Savant; grandchildren, Blythe Posner, Diana Posner, Jake Burks, Tucker Burks and Olivia Burks. Jewell is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Cecil Buller, Andrew Buller and Margie Palmer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be in St. Raphael Catholic Church on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. with Father Rueben Buller officiating. Burial will follow in Buller Hebert Cemetery in Hecker under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home. Visitation will be in St. Raphael Catholic Church on Friday beginning at 2: 00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a rosary at 6:00 p.m. and continue Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.



Sylvia M. Guillory

Iowa- Sylvia M. Guillory, 91, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2013 in Golden Age Nursing Home of Welsh surrounded by her family.

Sylvia was born March 5, 1921 in Iowa, LA to Archille and Polyma (Breaux) Miller. She enjoyed spending time with her family, preserving food and collecting rocks & shells. Sylvia was a devout Christian. Her loving spirit will live on in our hearts.

Survivors include her sons, David (JoAnn) Guillory of FL, Mike (Delores) Guillory of Iowa, Russell (Glynda) Guillory of Iowa and Steve Allen Guillory of Lake Charles; daughter, Marianne Edwards of CA; sisters, Ruth Witherwax (Burton) of Woodlawn and Bettie Johnson of Bundicks Lake; 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister, Lillian Broussard, brothers, Eddie, Clarence, Albert, Bert and DeWitt Corbello.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Dore` Langley officiating. Burial will follow in Lacassine Cemetery under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. on Friday with a rosary at 6:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

Edith Mae Fruge

“Maw Maw”

Edith Mae Fruge, 93, passed away in Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette on Tuesday, January 8, 2013.

Edith was born on December 18, 1919 to John Melvin Fontenot and Clonise Darbonne Fontenot in Elton, LA. She was employed by Fox Photo in Beaumont, TX for a number of years. Edith was a member of St. Pius Catholic of Lafayette. She enjoyed traveling with her family, dancing and playing board games. She loved playing the Wii with her grandkids. Her family has many of her crocheted items that she made thru the years. She was a loving, mother, grandmother, and friend and will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her son, Robert Joseph “Bobby Joe” Fruge (Sheila) of Iowa, LA; daughters, Dolores Ann Daigle (J. R.) of Chloe and Stephanie Marie Deshotel (Wayne) of Moss Bluff; 21 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren.She is preceded in death by her spouse, Joseph Bruce Fruge; sons, Bruce Paul Fruge and Berkman Lee Fruge and her parents.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be in St. Raphael Catholic Church on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. with Father Steve LeBlanc officiating. Burial will follow in Lacassine Cemetery under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home. Visitation will be in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home on Friday beginning at 2: 00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. and continue Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home.


Duffy N. LaFleur


LeBleu Settlement-Duffy N. LaFleur, 81, passed away in a local hospital Monday, January 14, 2013.

Duffy was born on February 20, 1931 in Washington, LA to Victor and Coralie (Soileau) LaFleur. He served our country during the Korean War. Duffy was a paratrooper with the 11th division. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star and 2 Purple Hearts. Duffy attended St. Joseph Catholic Church of LeBleu Settlement. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening.

Duffy is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Mildred LaFleur of LeBleu Settlement; son, David Wayne Vincent (Kathy); daughters, Jo Ann Bourgque (Robert), Tessie LeDoux and Debra Batey; brother, Jessie LaFleur (Deanne); sisters, Elaine Dupont, Eunice LaFleur and Bell Jarvis; Grand and greatgrandchildren, Ashley Vincent (Veronica), Cooper & Caleb Vincent, Brian & Demitri Batey, Daryl Toctocan (Michelle), Chase, Jax, Ashton and Tai Toctocan, Steve LeDoux (Michelle), Emberly & Zach LeDoux, Brandi LeDoux, Lyndi Wilder, Lynn Holton (Todd), Talisha, Brandon, Mackenzie, Jocelyn & Lilah Holton, Brett, Josh, Haylee & Skylar Abbott, Kristy Hebert, Autumn Bourque, Sommer Hebert & John Manuel, Briannna Hebert and Garrett & Ethan Manuel.


Funeral services will be held in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. with Monsignor Charles Dubois officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. and continue Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow in LeBleu Cemetery under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home.


John Paul Broussard


Holmwood-John Paul Broussard, 46, went to be with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on January 18, 2013.

John was born July 16, 1966 to Arstile and Helen (Grigsby) Broussard. John worked as a carpenter since the age of 14. He was baptized in Friendship Baptist Church in 1995. John loved to shrimp and being with his family and his beloved canine companions.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 18 years, Dianna Broussard, who loves him dearly now and forever; son, William Heisman of Atlanta, GA; mother, Helen Broussard; brothers, Joey (Karla) Broussard of Sulphur, LA, Gabrille (Ann) Broussard of Sulphur, LA, Tony (Trisha) Broussard of Iowa, LA, Clifford Broussard of Holmwood and Billy (Christy) Broussard of Dallas, TX; step children, Jimmie and Angelic Cormier of Lake Charles, LA; grandchildren, Kerry Bergeron, Mia and Jimmie Cormier, III and precious great-grandchild, Elaina Bergeron; his favorite in-laws, Willis & Elnora Romero (“Ma & Pa”) and a host of family and friends who loved him dearly.

Funeral services will be held in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home on Monday, January 21, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. with Bro. Dale Nazworth officiating. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday and continue Monday from 8:00 a.m. until the time of service. Cremation has been entrusted to Johnson & Brown Funeral Home.


Bryan Joseph Poole

Big Lake- Bryan Poole, 46, passed away in Dallas, Texas January 22, 2013.

Bryan was born June 23, 1966 to Elvin “Poochie” and Velma (Hebert) Poole in Welsh, LA. He graduated from Bell City and attended St. John Vianney. Bryan was employed as a truck driver with Ergon Trucking. Fishing, driving trucks and mowing grass were a few of his favorite things.



His survivors include his mother, Velma Poole of Hayes; son, Tanner (Amberlynn) Poole of WA; fiancé, Tena Coleman of Houston; siblings, Johnny Poole, Renell (Albert “Poncho”) Hoffpauir and Warren (Jeanette) Poole, all of Hayes; grandson, Everett Poole and nieces & nephews, Joni & Brandon Poole, Doyle & Amy Hoffpauir, Mindy Dupree and Jennifer Robicheaux.



Funeral services will be Saturday, January 26, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home with Father Emanuel Tanu officiating. Burial will be in Lorrain DeRouen Cemetery under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. in the funeral home with a scripture and rosary service at 6:30 p.m. and continue Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until the time of service.


Mildred Edna DeRouen

New Orleans – Mildred DeRouen, 95, passed away peacefully in her daughter’s home in New Orleans Saturday, January 19, 2013.

Mildred was born November 10, 1917 in Kelly, LA to Hardy and Nellie (DeLouche) Hall. She was a graduate of St. Francis Nursing School in Monroe and furthered her education at McNeese State University. She was a registered nurse and served as the In-service Director at St. Patrick Hospital for a number of years. When she and her late husband, Murphy DeRouen were residents of Iowa, they attended Iowa First Baptist Church. Mildred lived in Colorado for 12 years with her daughter and son-in-law where she worked and volunteered at the local Senior Center until she was 92, teaching Tai Chi and crafts as well. Her lifelong love was the Bible and children. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and doing many projects with them such as, Indian dancing with her grandson David. Her loving spirit will be missed by her family.

She is survived by her daughter, Denise DiGiglia and husband, Mike of New Orleans; brother, James Hall and wife, Janice of Carriere, Mississippi; grandchildren, David Reeves and wife, Amanda of Irwinville, LA, Roger Reeves and wife, Deanne of Sulphur, LA and Erin DiGiglia Black and husband, Travis of New Orleans and 4 great-grandchildren. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Murphy, daughter, Dorothy Mae Reeves, siblings, H. L. Hall, Henry Hall, Elaine Hall and Calvin “Buddy” Hall and grandson, Lee Michael DiGiglia.

Funeral services will be held in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home Friday, January 25, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Brandon Oliver officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and continue Friday from 8:00 a.m. until the time of service in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Lorrain DeRouen Cemetery under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home.

Orin P. Roussell

Lake Charles- Orin P. Roussell, 74, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013 in a local hospital.

Orin was born May 25, 1938 in Abbeville, LA. He was a painting contractor.

Survivors include his wife, Burgess Ann Roussell and son, Jeff Roussell and companion, Mika and granddaughter, Myah ; other children, Kevin Watkins, Darrell (Dana) Watkins, Jerry Watkins, Anita Watkins, Cheryl Watkins, Lisa Watkins and Tina Watkins; siblings, Luss Roussell & “Tute`” Roussell and numerous grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Kelly Vigo officiating. Cremation will follow the service under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service in the funeral home.
